It's hard to beat swimming when it comes to a sport that strengthens the body, soothes the mind, regulates breathing, stimulates circulation and puts no stress on the joints all in one. Unlike running or weight training, which concentrate on specific muscle groups, swimming benefits the upper body, torso and legs together and is one of the fastest ways to improve general strength, stamina and cardiovascular fitness.

“...I propose great things for inspection and contemplation by every explorer of Nature,” wrote the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1610 after probing the heavens with his crude, self-made telescope. Those “great things” he mentioned are still up there, ready for today’s budding astronomers young and old to inspect and contemplate.

How many times have you finished a dive and said to your dive buddy "that was fantastic - I wish I had a camera!" Underwater photography is one of the truly rewarding ways of bringing home the diving experience. The pictures or videos you shoot are a lasting record of your underwater experiences and can be shared with friends and family for years to come.

This class is broken into four parts: theory, pool practice, open water dive and final review and critique.

In this introductory underwater photography theory class you will be introduced to basic camera equipment ( or bring your own) and the principles of how to use it in a liquid environment. We will discuss special considerations that will give you better results with the equipment you are using. We will have several types of cameras and accessory equipment for you to look at and use. Camera care and maintenance will also be covered.

We will start our practice in a controlled pool environment where you will have a chance to practice using the camera equipment and set up pictures according to the principles that we covered in the theory class. Cameras, film and processing will be supplied

.After reviewing the pool class results, we will go on an open water dive, here you can apply what you have learned to capturing nature as seen thru the view finder. We will finish the class with a final review and critique of the pictures.

Reading before class:SSI UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY SPECIALTY BOOK, is a good introductory book well suited for this class, if you plan to purchase a more complex camera, then one of these books would also be recommended, HOW TO USE SEA & SEA CAMERAS, Howard Hall's SUCCESS FULL UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY, THE NIKONOS HANDBOOK, CHURCHES BEGINNING UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY.

This class can be used as one of the two specialty classes to fulfill your SSI SPECIALTY DIVER certification.
