It's hard to beat swimming when it comes to a sport that strengthens the body, soothes the mind, regulates breathing, stimulates circulation and puts no stress on the joints all in one. Unlike running or weight training, which concentrate on specific muscle groups, swimming benefits the upper body, torso and legs together and is one of the fastest ways to improve general strength, stamina and cardiovascular fitness.

“...I propose great things for inspection and contemplation by every explorer of Nature,” wrote the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1610 after probing the heavens with his crude, self-made telescope. Those “great things” he mentioned are still up there, ready for today’s budding astronomers young and old to inspect and contemplate.

WHY DIVE A REBREATHER?

Using a high oxygen gas allows you longer bottom times with less chance of decompression sickness. More energy at the end of a day of diving. You get to experience very quiet diving, less bubbles, warm moist air, smaller tanks, beter fish interaction, longer bottom times and more fun!

The U.S. Navy has used SCUBA rebreathers since the 1930’s and all of the national militaries continue to use them for covert operations. The recreational dive market is now seeing SCUBA rebreathers in greater numbers as the technology has become more user friendly and less expensive.

Operation

A rebreather in its simplest form is a closed circuit breathing device consisting of a breathing loop, gas supply, breathing bags and a CO2 canister. A key feature of a rebreather is that it extends the life of the gas supply allowing the user to carry a smaller, lighter tank. No longer do you need to carry large tanks to get a decent bottom time.

How Do I Get Started Diving Rebreathers?

To begin you need to be a certified diver and have completed our SSI NITROX speecialty class . Nitrox classes are offered every other month and could be taught as a lead in to your rebreather class.

Learning to dive with rebreathers will require basic training and familiarization with the set up and safe use of a new piece of equipment. Pool and open water training covers setup, dive planning, basic buoyancy skills, and rebreather contingency planning.

Your rebreather class will consist of three parts:

PART ONE registration, pay deposit pick up class materials for home study (TDI "SEMI CLOSED CIRCUIT REBREATHER" manual).

PART TWO: The classroom portion of your class deals with the theory and mechanics of your rebreather. Since DRAGER manufactures two rebreathers the DOLPHIN and the RAY, you will need to decide which unit to be trained with. The mechanics of both are about the same but the set up and use vary so you will need specific training with the unit you plan to dive.

PART THREE will be a fun day of open water diving (two dives) will complete your training! These can be incorporated into any of our dive trips.

Included in the class cost is: TDI Manual, tuition, use of the rebreather, SODASORB, NITROX gas for the pool and lake dives, pool rental and transportation to the lake. (This class could be completed on any of our trips and the price would be adjusted.) Certification will be issued through SSI and will count towards your Level TWO SPECIALTY or Level THREE ADVANCED OPEN WATER certification.
